The Five Pound Taco

You know how they say everything is bigger in Texas?  Well, I'm not one to disagree, especially after our road trip the other day to find the biggest taco in Texas.

Shortly after our arrival in Corpus Christi, a friend from back home sent us a text, encouraging us to to check out Recio's Smokehouse Restaurant and Catering in Corpus Christi.  Turns out, Recio's claims to have bragging rights on serving the largest taco in Texas.  Weighing in just short of five pounds, (yes - I said FIVE POUNDS) this monstrous taco is an amazing homemade tortilla stuffed with refried beans, potatoes, breakfast sausage, chizo, eggs, brisket, and cheese.  And it's a real bargain, priced at a mere $12.99!  Better yet, if you happen to have a big appetite, it's free if you can eat the entire thing in under thirteen minutes!

So of course we had to check this bad boy out. Jer and I hopped in the car and the road trip was on!  We were off to see THE TACO!  The largest taco of all!

Soon we pull into Recio's parking lot, and there we were face to face with what appeared to be an old Mexican Catina.  At first we wondered if we were at the right place.  Only a few pickups were parked in front of the building.  But no - there was no mistake.  Plastered on the side of the building, in large print were the words, Reico's Smokehouse and Catering.  Yep!  We were at the right place!

So Jer and I cautiously opened the front door, almost as if we were expecting to be greeted by a gunslinger in the midst of a quick draw.  After all - this is Texas!  You never know!  But nope!  No gunslinger and no saloon!  Just rows and rows of trophies!  It turns out Reico's is serious about BBQ competitions, and they are darn good at it!

Even though, the building was large, the tables were few.  There was nothing fancy about this place.  I came to the conclusion that Recio's is mainly a catering business, but they continue to serve a few locals.  Us Iowans, not being local, quickly got the look.  You know THAT look, like what are YOU doing here?

But our anxiety was soon laid to rest, as the owners, the employees, and even their customers warmly welcomed us. One customer, an old timer with a long grey beard, even went as far as to offer us several pieces of brisket right off his own plate.  He swore it was the best smoked brisket we would ever find.  And after a taste, I think he was right!

But it wasn't brisket for us today.  We were here for the big guy.  When we mentioned that a friend had informed us of the five pound taco, the middle aged owner proudly replied, "Yep!  We're on the worldwide web!"

So after what seemed like just a few short minutes, our order was here - the big guy, the monster, the taco of all tacos!  And let me tell you, it didn't disappoint!  Oh my goodness!  Not only was it big, it was delicious!

Knowing neither of us could master the 13 minute challenge, Jer and I shared - and it wasn't long before we got full!  Super full!

So, needless to say, we left with a "to go" box.  And while there was no Western reenactment and no gunslingers, our road trip found us a few new friends, a great lunch, and enough left-overs for supper and breakfast too!  Yum!  Thanks Dave and Crystal!
